They will each be awarded career-enhancing experiences thanks to the generosity of some of the UK’s top music organisations.<br/><br/>The panel of judges was led by trumpeter John Wallace CBE, former Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was joined by soprano Jane Irwin, violinist Greg Lawon, clarinettist Adam Lee and pianist Sinae Lee. The best biscuit dunker in Britain has been found – and it’s a creative designer from North London.<br/><br/>Simon Girma won the inaugural National Dunking Championship at Underbelly Boulevard in Soho, London.<br/><br/>The tea and biscuit lover, aged 35, entered the McVitie's tournament which challenged eight contestants to compete in a ‘dunk off’.<br/><br/>They submerge their biscuit in a hot beverage for the longest duration possible without it breaking – with one point awarded for every second it was submerged.<br/><br/>Upon removing the biscuit, it must remain intact without breaking – failing this, the participant loses the round.<br/><br/>The person with the most points after three dunk offs wins, and goes on to the next round, under the watchful eye of biscuit experts.<br/><br/>Each round features a different biscuit, challenging contestants' knowledge of each one’s dunking characteristics.<br/><br/>Simon was crowned victorious after a series of intense dunk off rounds – where he played a Digestive, Rich Tea, Chocolate Hobnob and Gingernut – including a sudden death tie breaker.<br/><br/>In the final, both Simon and his opponent Bruno got 58 points over three rounds – and as a result, they went on to a tie break round, with Simon scoring 25 to Bruno’s 23 points.<br/><br/>And the biscuit that delivered the winning dunk? The Chocolate Hobnob, beloved of dunkers around the world.<br/><br/>Of his win, Simon said: “I’m so proud to be the winner of the first ever McVitie’s Dunking Championship.<br/><br/>“It was an amazing competition – credit to all the other contestants who were worthy opponents, but I knew my extensive dunk training regime would come good.<br/><br/>“Having a slow and steady hand, and lots of practicing with a variety of biscuits so you know each one well.”<br/><br/>“It just goes to show that having a biscuit with my tea has finally paid off.<br/><br/>A panel of judges – led by the biscuit makers chief dunking officer Dr Helen Pilcher - oversaw gameplay.<br/><br/>One of the standout moments of the championship was the Jaffa Cake round – a less common dunk choice, and one which flummoxed players thanks to its unique sponge-like texture.<br/><br/>The Rich Tea round also proved perilous, as contestants worked to keep their nerve and avoid a dunking disaster.<br/><br/>Research conducted by Dr Pilcher found a Hobnob can withstand 12.5 seconds of dunking - depending on hot drink temperature.<br/><br/>Whereas the ‘dunking danger zone’ of a Rich Tea kicks in at 8.8 seconds – deeming it a higher risk biscuit.<br/><br/>Dr Pilcher said: “Being the judge of the National Dunking Championship felt like the perfect evolution of my role as chief dunking officer.<br/><br/>“The contestants were all amazing and had brilliant biscuit knowledge.<br/><br/>“As a dunking enthusiast myself, it was extremely rewarding to see my dunking research put into practice and brought to life in such a unique way.”")
_meet-the-makers-inside-the-thirsk-furniture-firm-part-of-town39s-fabric.webp "In the second in our Meet the Makers series Matt Stephenson visit Treske Furniture in Thirsk.<br/><br/>There’s a timeless spirit about the towns and villages in the Hambleton and Ryedale districts of North Yorkshire: despite the traffic that zooms through on the busy ‘A’ roads, there’s a feeling that the Kilburn White Horse looks down on the landscape and sees that not everything has changed.<br/>A certain constancy and a respect for tradition underpin the work of Thirsk-based furniture company Treske - and a definite ‘Yorkshire-ness’ too.<br/><br/>“We’re a small company, everybody knows everybody here,” explains CEO Justin Bartlett. “We’re part of the fabric of the town, most of our people live here, we’re an important part of the community and that keeps us rooted in the locality.”<br/><br/>Treske was established in 1973 by ex-Ampleforth College pupil John Gormley – who, despite being a Londoner by birth, found his spiritual home under the gaze of the monumental White Horse and decided to establish his business in Thirsk.<br/><br/>Thirsk appears in the Domesday book as Tresche, the name deriving from the Old Norse for fen or lake. Tresche /Treske/ Thirsk – are different ways of spelling the same thing.<br/><br/>The influence of the Benedictine monks at Ampleforth was clear in Gormley’s approach at Treske, a sense of the Benedictine values of community, stewardship, hospitality and discipline being at the heart of the business, which still occupies the same old maltings that Gormley moved into more than 50 years ago.<br/><br/>In the late 1960s and early 1970s there was a growing interest in self-sufficiency and craft, and Treske can be seen broadly as part of that movement.<br/><br/>Local apprentices literally lived on the premises, learning age-old skills from time-served cabinet makers, eating with Gormley and family at the end of the day, sitting on Treske chairs at Treske tables and sleeping in Treske bunks.<br/><br/>The furniture itself was simple and elegant whilst being robust and well-made, Shakerish-style for a Yorkshire farmhouse, kind-of Habitat-meets-Ercol: “Yorkshire furniture for Yorkshire people with Yorkshire timber.”<br/><br/>Gormley was well-known around local markets and fairs, where he’d set up stall and sell direct to the public. Some years later, and a few miles up the A1 from Thirsk, Gormley’s youngest brother Anthony – also an old Ampleforthian - would also produce work that blended elements of the White Horse with certain religious overtones – the Angel of The North quickly became one of the UKs most-loved works of public art.<br/><br/>In parallel with making furniture for the home, John Gormley also began to produce ecclesiastical furniture – again, the Ampleforth education clearly played a part, a feeling for church buildings being close to Gormley’s heart.<br/><br/>“It’s a side of the business which is still incredibly important to us today,\")
