Description:
For many of us, education comes hand in hand with our childhood and teenage years – whether that’s learning to read and write or getting to grips with life’s everyday tasks and challenges. However, when it comes to money, each person has their own experience of gaining financial responsibility.

Looking to those around us to inspire better money habits could be key. Over a third of us (36%) say they’re regularly investing and saving having picked this up from others, and the same goes for paying off debt as quickly as possible (29%) and paying attention to savings rates and current accounts (19%).

Half (50%) of us admit to not discussing finances with family, friends, or peers until at least aged 19, while 15% confessed to leaving it past the age of 30. A further 20% of us aren’t open to discussing savings with family and friends at all, and just 14% are very open to discussing investments and pension contributions.

This late awakening could be impacting how hard UK consumers are making their money work, with 39% of consumers having not discussed savings products like ISAs at all when growing up – despite the potential benefits of the tax-free accounts.

Lifting the lid on those influences, only one in eight (13%) consider themselves to be very money savvy, but this more than doubles to 29% for those who consider their parents or guardians to be very money-savvy too. But money savviness doesn’t just come from friends and family.

Looking at wider influences, half (45%) of Brits mention experts like Martin Lewis, followed by banks (37%), newspapers or magazines (20%), and forums or the internet (20%). Schools or higher education (15%) and employers (14%) all rank lower.

The research from Nutmeg comes as we approach the end of the current Tax Year, at what can be a confusing time when many people may not be aware of the steps they can take to spring clean their finances. Claire Exley, head of advice and guidance at Nutmeg, is available for interviews to discuss the research, champion financial education, and share her top tips for building better financial health – from more discussions about money with our children and those around us, to how the late starters among us can catch up.

The Television Match Official (TMO) in Saracen's win over Harlequins appeared to be heard saying he would not review an incident after it was highlighted on television commentary.<br/><br/>TNT Sports co-commentator Austin Healey highlighted potential foul play from Harlequins’ Stephan Lewies on Owen Farrell.<br/><br/>The incident occurred with 13 minutes remaining of Saracen's dominant 52-7 win over Harlequins.<br/><br/>Farrell had reacted angrily and confronted Lewies, with Healy highlighting the reason for the former England captain's response.<br/><br/>Healy noted that Lewies may have slid into the ruck late and caught Farrell, with his comment heard as TMO Stuart Terheege was heard to ask for a replay.<br/><br/>'Owen Farrell is upset and it's worth another look. (Stephan) Lewis comes in with his knees into the ruck. I think it's worth another look,' Healy said on TNT Sports.<br/><br/>'I think six slides into the ruck late with both of his knees. <br/><br/>'Where he hits Farrell could be really interesting.'<br/><br/>Fans were stunned when Terheege appeared to suggest he would not review the incident due to Healy having highlighted the potential foul play.<br/><br/>'The problem we’ve got now of course is that it looks like Healey’s instigated it,' Terheege was heard saying.<br/><br/>'The problem I’ve got now is that it looks like Austin’s instigated it because we're late, so I don't want to talk about it, OK?'<br/><br/>Viewers questioned how the TMO could hear TNT Sports commentary of the incident.<br/><br/>Healey upon reviewing the footage declared that it was a 'yellow card all day long', with the former England star determining Lewies should have been penalised for a no-arms tackle on Farrell.<br/><br/>A replay was shown after Farrell had converted Juan Martin Gonzale's try with an official, believed to be Terheege, then heard saying 'Oh come on, don’t show it because it' before the microphone was turned off.<br/><br/>Healy commented on the decision by the TMO not to intervene in the incident post-match. <br/><br/>'Think the TMO has had better days looks like ego got in the way of ruling on foul play,' Healy wrote on X, formerly Twitter.<br/><br/>England star Joe Marler, who plays for Harlequins, also weighed in by labeling the incident 'ridiculous'. <br/><br/>In a statement to the Telegraph, Premiership Rugby confirmed it will 'review all incidents and follow the same process followed every week.'<br/><br/>Paul McNamara, ITV's senior live director for major events, revealed last week that TMOs sit alongside him when the broadcaster is showing matches.<br/><br/>McNamara told the Telegraph that the commentary feed to the TMO is cut when there is a review to ensure the official cannot be influenced by the commentators.<br/><br/> Saracens' victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium lifted them above Harlequins into second in the Premiership table.
