A homeless woman says living in a bus shelter with her boyfriend and mum is safer than being put in temporary housing with drug addicts.

Destiny Mitchell moved into the 3m (9.8ft) by 1m (3.2ft) glass and metal shelter in Selly Oak, Birmingham, seven months ago.

The 26-year-old, who has autism, lives in the disused bus stop on Bristol Road with boyfriend Ryan, 31, and her 44-year-old mum.

Destiny says the council offered them temporary accommodation but she does not want to be separated from her mum who also has autism.

The trio have tried to give the graffiti-covered shelter home comforts with a carpet, drawers and even an old pair of Super Mario curtains where the timetables were once displayed.

They have also been given garden chairs, a bin and sleeping bags from wellwishers.

She says the three of them use sellotape and cardboard given to them by students to patch up leaks in the roof and walls of their shelter.

Destiny says they slept in a doorway of a Greggs but moved into the bus stop after being moved on by the police.

Speaking today, she said: “When we found this place it was my idea to create this living space.

“Before I lived in a bus stop, I was sleeping in a blanket on the floor, but I didn't feel safe.

“I’ve been living here for seven months. Before that we lived near Greggs before the police moved us on.

“Because we’re not students they don't have housing for us.

“There’s three of us in here, me, my partner and my mum. This is all new to me, I used to live in a tent.

“I’ve been homeless for two years off and on. At one point our tent got burnt down.

“I’m from Wolverhampton and I had a flat but bad things happened and I had to leave it and was made homeless. That’s when we came to Selly Oak.

“I saw this bus stop out of use. It was cold and starting to rain. We’ve had to sellotape the roof to stop the rain getting in.

“The students help me sellotape the windows, I’ve got a chest of drawers, a carpet.”

The family will now have to move out after Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) announced it was demolishing the bus shelter within weeks.

Destiny added: “They’ve said we’ve got a month left and they’re going to destroy it.

“I’ve been in here a long time, I don’t want them to destroy my home, we haven't got anywhere else to live.

“If the council doesn’t help us we’re going to try and move into another bus stop.

“We wanted to get a caravan. We don’t want to go into a shared house because of drug users. We don’t want that, we don't use drugs. It's not safe for us.

“They are saying they won’t house my mum and us together. My mum’s disabled.

“I want them to house us before they take the bus shelter down.

“I just want to make sure we all stay together as a family, that’s all I want.

“Nobody gives me any money. I haven’t got any clothes, I haven't got a bra on.

“No one gives me any money to buy what I need. They give me food but I need clothes too.

A couple were stunned to find a secret 200-year-old well underneath their hallway when they began renovating their cottage.

Victoria Ellington, 36, and her husband Andrew, 40, were amazed when they discovered the 27ft hole by the front door.

Once explored, they found that the well, which is thought to be centuries-old, still contained crystal-clear water.

The couple, from Redcar, North Yorks., couldn’t bear to cover up the feature so they decided to find a way to incorporate it into building.

After months of hard work, Victoria and Andrew managed to install a pump to create their very own wishing well, covered by protective glass.

The couple now rent the beach-front property, called Bute Cottage, to holidaymakers who can enjoy the quirky water feature.

Mum-of-two Victoria said: “We bought the cottage during the 2020 Covid lockdown and Andrew, who is a builder, started renovating it.

“We were planning to add an extension and build a family home but the foundations started slipping and we knew something was up.

“One day Andrew found this deep hole and realised it was quite a deep well right on top of the property by the front door.

“He was digging at the foundations and all the soil was falling into this hole.

“He just sent me a photo and said: 'Oh my god, have you seen this?'

“We knew then that we couldn’t build an extension so Andrew just decided to make it part of the building and we could rent the cottage out.”

Instead of paving over the well the couple covered it with a glass walkway and lined the walls of the shaft with lights.

Victoria, mum to Oscar five, and Henry, nine, said: “Our sons were excited about having a wishing well so we thought we should make that a reality.

\

THREE ALBUMS INTO his career, Conan Gray wrote what he calls his “first ever love song,” a lovelorn ballad titled “Alley Rose” from Found Heaven. The 25-year-old musician had written about love before, but not from the perspective of having truly been put through the emotional wringer by way of a real, reciprocated relationship. On the latest episode of Rolling Stone‘s The Breakdown, Gray delves into how “Alley Rose” — written on his own and produced by Greg Kurstin — emerged as the one song on the album that details the aftermath of the crush he spent most of the record singing about.

“I don’t really write about things immediately after they happen,” Gray explains. “After I have enough perspective, then I start to write about situations in a way that’s more accurate to how I felt rather than just like, ‘Fuck you!’ It’s a lot more nuanced when I give myself time to write about something.”

Gray had written entire albums about crushes, unrequited feelings, and internal reflections before — his 2020 debut Kid Krow and 2022’s Superache — but he wasn’t prepared for the way heartbreak could bulldoze his process. “[“Alley Rose”] made it on the album very much at the very, very end, because I hadn’t really been planning on writing about a breakup until I got broken up with,” he says. “And then I was depressed for seven months and didn’t write and couldn’t work because I was severely ill.”

An 80-year-old donated a rare original parachute dummy from D-Day to a museum - after mistaking it for a scarecrow.

Robert Bowley was clearing out his late brother's home when he came across the dummy.

His brother Michael Bowley had been fond of French collectors items and got it while on a trip to Normandy in the 1950s or 1960s.

Robert said he had initially mistaken it for a scarecrow before he passed it along to a museum.

That's when he discovered it was in fact a rare surviving D-Day artefact worth thousands.

The 'scarecrow' was one of several hundred from Operation Bodyguard, part of Operation Overlord, on June 6 1944.

Paradummies, made of hessian cloth, straw and sawdust, were dropped to create fake invasions by allied forces to divert enemy attention from the Normandy landing beaches.

Most of the dummies had a self-destroying mechanism to destroy the evidence - making this surviving dummy rare and valuable.

The paradummy is thought to be worth around £10,000 and one of less than 30 still in existence.

It is now on permanent display in the D-Day exhibition at House on the Hill Toy Museum.

Robert, a retired watchmaker and antique collector from Braintree, Essex, said: \
