_how-china39s-richest-billionaires-made-their-money-in-2024.webp "As China’s stock market goes, so goes its billionaire population. And last year was not a good year for many Chinese stocks. As a result, the number of mainland Chinese billionaires on Forbes’ World’s Billionaires list fell for the third consecutive year. A total of 406 Chinese billionaires made the ranking, down from 495 a year ago and a record 626 in 2021. Continued fallout from the pandemic and geopolitical tension drove down stock prices and hurt economic growth in the world’s second largest economy. A deepening slump in the country’s property market also diminished fortunes.<br/><br/>Still, mainland China has the second largest number of billionaires globally, behind only the U.S., which has 813 billionaires this year.<br/><br/>Mainland China doesn’t include passport holders from Hong Kong or Macau, whom Forbes lists separately. Counting those billionaires, greater China has 473 members, down from 562 in 2023, 607 in 2022 and 698 in 2021.<br/><br/>The Forbes World’s Billionaires list is a snapshot of wealth using stock prices and exchange rates from March 8, 2024. Some people become richer or poorer within days of publication. We list individuals rather than multigenerational families who share fortunes, though we include wealth belonging to a billionaire’s spouse and children in certain cases, namely if that person is the founder of the fortune. For Russian billionaires, fortunes were calculated using ownership structures from February 2022, prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and before many made transfers of assets to managers, friends and others in an effort to protect their holdings from sanctions. We value a variety of assets, including private companies, real estate, art and more. We don’t pretend to know each billionaire’s private balance sheet (though some provide it). With the exception of 2021— when the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 baseball season—it was the first time values increased less than 4% year over year since 2010.<br/><br/>The good news? Since Forbes first began doing valuations of MLB teams in 1998, when the average team was valued at $194 million, owning a team would have beaten inflation by more than five-fold and beaten the S&P 500 (excluding the reinvestment of dividends) by nearly double.<br/><br/>Revenue in MLB rose 10% in 2023, to an average of $378 million per team—the steepest increase since 2015. That increase was due to record ticket, merchandise, television and licensing revenue. But operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) only went up 6%, to an average of $19 million due to more spending on players, technology and analytics.<br/><br/>Forbes’ team valuations are enterprise values (equity plus net debt) based on historical transactions and the future economics of the sport and each team. Revenue and operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) are for the 2023 season and are net of revenue sharing, competitive balance taxes and stadium revenue used for debt service. Their average internal rate of return on its 14 exits, all in health care, is 53%, net of fees. That’s nearly triple the average net IRR of U.S. buyout funds raised since 2009, according to data from Cambridge Associates. After Shore took its 20% to 30% cut of profits, its exits multiplied investors’ money by 5.5 times on average, also nearly triple the average total value to paid-in capital multiple of U.S. buyout funds raised during that period. Shore has never unloaded a company for less than three times cost before fees, nor, it says, has it ever suffered a loss. “Those are top 1% returns in private equity,” marvels one investor who asked not to be identified, citing his organization’s press policy. “That’s rarefied air, right? That’s more like venture capital than a traditional buyout firm.”<br/><br/>Ishbia and his team have acquired more than 1,000 mom-and-pop shops across the country (average cost: $15 million) since Shore’s 2009 founding and rolled them up into 61 larger chains of things including autism treatment clinics, bakeries and exterminators. “We’re buying businesses in Akron, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, and Birmingham, Alabama,” Ishbia says. “There’s more low-hanging fruit for me.
